Next week marks the end of Storyknife’s first year in full operation. Five months of writers in residence. Five months of late night conversations over chai, long walks together, reading work to each other, gathering around the table to feast on Maura’s incredible dinners. Five months of lovesick moose, sandhill cranes, and a cheeky jay.Continue reading “October at Storyknife”

Autumn at Storyknife and Applications Open
Only one month of residencies remains for the 2021 Storyknife Writers Retreat season. One more month this year for women writers to hunker down in their cabins, watch autumn winds ripple the dry grass in the meadow, and write their hearts out. One more month this year for them to gather in Eva’s House toContinue reading “Autumn at Storyknife and Applications Open”
Opportunity and food for thought
In 2022, Storyknife will have writers in residence from May through October. It hardly seems possible that it’s right around the corner, but it is and, in fact, we’re accepting applications for next year starting on August 1st through September 30th. All of the details of how to apply and what you’ll need are on Storyknife’sContinue reading “Opportunity and food for thought”
What’s going on at Storyknife in June!
So far, the month has been gloriously full of women writing, amazing food, and budding community. June has pulled her usual weather shenanigans: brilliant sun, wind, sudden downpours, and yesterday, fog. It is difficult for me to explain to you how much it means to actually be fulfilling the mission of Storyknife. What was theContinue reading “What’s going on at Storyknife in June!”
Waiting and Dreaming
If you’ve been reading this website for more than few months, you’ll have watched as Storyknife sprung from the dirt. In fact we’re a little more than two weeks away from May 4th, the one-year anniversary of the groundbreaking at Storyknife. In one year, what was a dream and a set of building plans hasContinue reading “Waiting and Dreaming”
What a difference…
….a month makes. Just last month at this time, we were planning the April residencies and hearing a little about a virus that was spreading overseas. Now, we find ourselves postponing the April residency and our planned Grand Opening ceremony. We are still preparing Storyknife for the residents that we’ve scheduled this year. We’re watchingContinue reading “What a difference…”
Happy Valentine’s Day
Let me tell you about a kind of love that the media and culture just don’t talk about very often. It’s the kind of love that one gives themselves when they put away cultural expectations in order to pick up the gift inside. When I tell women that I work for a women writers’ retreat, soContinue reading “Happy Valentine’s Day”
Celebrate the light.
In Alaska, we pay very close attention to the light. On Solstice, we’re slated to get about 5 hours and 58 minutes. Every year, I try to be on Bishop’s Beach in Homer to see the sun come over the mountains on Solstice. Last year it was cloudy, so the picture above is from 2017.Continue reading “Celebrate the light.”
Open the door….
Last week, I gave a little pep talk about Giving Tuesday. I asked you to think of all the women writers whose books never got published. Heck, those books, plays, poems never even got written, because the laundry needed doing, kids needed feeding. Or worse, women writers were actively prevented from becoming literate. How manyContinue reading “Open the door….”
